My Story

I’m not here to make you vegan, but I’ll tell you why I am. 

It all started when I was in 6th grade. I hatched baby chicks from the egg as a science project.  We kept them for a few weeks before returning them to the farm. Every day when I came home from school, they would all run at me peeping and peeping. I sat down, “criss-cross, applesauce,” as my kids say, and the chicks all sat on me like a kindergarten class waiting to hear a story. They often fell asleep on my lap. They were adorable.

One night after this, my mother tried to serve me chicken. I felt like a hypocrite and just couldn’t do it. My family always said they loved animals, and they did! We had dogs, cats, fish, guinea pigs, and a pony! How many little girls can say they had a pony? Anyway, the truth is they loved some animals while I loved all

My parents were very traditional meat eaters so my mother brought me to a nutritionist who was a vegetarian so I could learn high-quality information about the value of a vegetarian lifestyle. I wanted to harm less animals and I wanted to be healthy.   

I studied Nutrition in college at the University of Massachusetts and the Institute for Integrative Nutrition as well as Cornell in their plant-based certification program.  

I remained a “regular old vegetarian” until about 5 years ago when I was sick of eating healthy and still having acne on my face in my 40s. Removing dairy, eggs, and gluten from my diet and adding healing herbs and supplements finally cleared it up after many frustrating attempts with more mainstream advice.

Fortunately, I also healed a very scary, painful issue in my gastrointestinal system that the specialists couldn’t diagnose or treat. I would get attacks where my stomach felt like it was on fire. The pain would become so intense that I’d become dizzy and even pass out! 

Once, I narrowly escaped a fatal incident by pulling off the highway just in time when one of these attacks occurred. I can say with great relief that this is in my past and I now know that I can heal my health issues with plants, supplements, mind-body awareness, and self-love.  In my mid-40’s I have more energy than most I know, I feel young every day, and I choose happiness.

I believe so strongly in the transformative effect of plants. When we work together, you will decide whether going vegan or vegetarian is right for you, or simply reducing your portions of meat, dairy and eggs. I’ll never take something out without giving you more back – lots of ideas of new, exciting vegetable and fruit recipes to treat your body.  And we’ll go at your pace. There’s no judgment. Ever. Only compassion for you as a human being brave enough to venture out of your comfort zone and strive to take better care of yourself. My job is to help you make healthy decisions and to stretch you.  

To quote Dr. Kim Williams, President of the American College of Cardiology 2015-2016, “There are two kinds of cardiologists: vegans and those who haven’t read the data.”
